Worker awarded £7m accident compensation payout

A male employee working at a boatyard on the Isle of Wight has received a large accident compensation payout following a serious work accident.

The man was attempting to store a boat at Bembridge Marine Ltd in Bembridge, when the metal gantry he was standing on collapsed underneath him.

A piece of falling metal hit him on the head and he suffered severe brain damage as a result of the incident, which took place in September 2006.

The man, now 26, was initially given just a five per cent chance of survival, and has required 24-hour care ever since. He has also been forced to endure post-traumatic hydrocephalus.

Counsel David Wilby QC, said that the man had suffered problems with memory, concentration and fatigue and is not able to live independently. He has now been awarded £7.2 million in accident compensation.

Representing the man, Claire Howard, partner at legal firm Blake Lapthorn, said, “This settlement provides the reassurance that he will receive care for the rest of his life and is a case that shows what can be achieved when parties work together.”
