Over £3,000 accident compensation for faulty door injury

A train driver from Wales has won £3,175 in accident compensation after he hurt his back in an accident at work.

The employee needed to take six weeks off work after he injured his back trying to open a faulty roller door to access pumps. It was alleged that colleagues that he worked alongside had previously complained about the problems with the door but nothing had been done to fix it.

The train driver said he had asked for help opening the door more than once but no one had come to his aid and he had been forced to do it himself. When he tried to pull up the roller shutter, he felt a twinge of pain and strained his back. He had to take painkillers in the six weeks he was recovering at home. Experts have said his injury should heal by mid-spring.

His lawyer argued that the door should have been fixed as soon as the employer was made aware of the problem and a union representative for the train driver reminded businesses that equipment had to be kept in a good state of repair. The claim was settled out of court.
