A male factory worker employed at a paper manufacturer in Kendal has received an accident compensation payout following a serious work incident.
The man was attempting to fix a large machine at James Cropper Plc when the accident happened. His sleeve was caught in the inner workings of the piece of equipment, dragging his hand and arm into the machine.
His arm and hand were crushed and he also suffered serious burn injuries to both, requiring a skin graft from his hip.
The man has been left permanently disabled as a result of the accident. The HSE carried out an investigation into the accident, which revealed that there had been no 'safe working practice' set out for the piece of machinery the worker was operating.
There had also been two other accidents relating to a similar machine on the factory floor. The worker was unable to stop the machine as there was no emergency stop button, and a colleague had to dash downstairs to stop the machine.
James Cropper Plc admitted that it was liable for the accident and the case was settled out of court, with the worker being awarded £300,000 compensation.
