Cyclist wins £750,000 in accident compensation

A cyclist who had to have his leg amputated after being hit by a car has been awarded £750,000 in accident compensation.

The man, who worked in insurance, was doing a personal off-road cycling challenge when he was hit from behind by a car on the A7 in Cumbria. The cyclist was thrown onto the car's windscreen. The 62-year-old sustained head injuries and his leg was broken in five places.

He needed five operations immediately after the accident, followed by another nine procedures later on. Eventually, his right leg was amputated below the knee and he now uses a prosthetic limb, which needs to be changed on a regular basis. He also needed to purchase a prosthetic limb for sports and one for use in water.

The driver of the vehicle admitted liability and the case was settled for a total of £750,000. The cyclist received interim payments of a total of £123,000. These payments enabled him to buy prosthetic limbs and aids and to pay for rehabilitation and therapy. Part of the money will be used to buy replacement prosthetic limbs in future and will also go towards buying a specially adapted bungalow.
