A nursery worker forced to change jobs after she injured herself at work has received £7,500 in accident compensation.
The accident happened when she slipped and fell at the crèche where she worked on a floor which had just been mopped. No wet floor signs had been put out by the cleaner to warn people about the risk of slipping.
The nursery worker landed on her left hip, sustaining a serious strain injury. She also damaged the soft tissue in both her thumbs. Following the accident, the 43-year-old employee had to take a week off work. When she returned she could not bend down well, meaning she couldn’t make eye contact with the babies she cared for – a key part of her role. She was unable to change nappies or pick children up.
She felt she had no choice but to change jobs to working in a secondary school. Following a claim for compensation, her employer admitted liability and conceded that a sign should have been put out. A union representative said that the cleaner had not received adequate training and called the scene an “unmarked skating rink”. A solicitor agreed that the workplace accident was easily avoidable.
