An overweight woman has been awarded a substantial accident compensation payout following an accident involving a toilet seat.
The woman was working for Birmingham City Council when she used the workplace toilet and the toilet seat collapsed under her weight. She was injured following the collapse and went on to claim accident compensation as a result. She was eventually awarded a payout of £1,750 due to the injuries she sustained.
According to The Birmingham Mail, the woman's claim was just one of 274 claims which were made by employees of Birmingham City Council over the last five years, all of which were won by the worker.
As a result of the high level of claims, the city council paid out a higher level of accident compensation than any other local authority, with £4.9 million worth of settlements being paid.
Some of the claims made by staff include an employee who claimed that their big toe was broken after a table fell onto it, and was awarded £1,100 in compensation as a result. Another employee was awarded £3,250 following a trip on a path that was found to be defective.
A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said that the number of claims were small in comparison to the workforce, which totalled almost 50,000.
