Stable hand wins accident compensation after workplace fall

A man who was injured at work whilst carrying out his job as a stable hand has been awarded accident compensation.

The man was steam cleaning a stable when the accident happened in 2009. A scaffolding plank which he was standing on tipped and he fell eight feet to the ground, fracturing both of his heels in the process.

Following the accident, he had to be treated in hospital and underwent surgery. He has been unable to return to his job working with horses since his workplace injury. The man took action against his employer, alleging that she failed to prevent his accident.

He has been awarded £127,500 in accident compensation, reported to be the largest amount to be won by a stable worker to date. The case was based around a breach of Work at Height Regulations and negligence.

Earlier this year, another stable worker received accident compensation of £10,000 after he was injured when he was thrown from a horse. The stable worker said he had raised concerns about being unable to control the horse but was told to ride it anyway. He suffered concussion, cuts, bruises and an injured shoulder in the accident.
