A Liverpool chip shop worker could be in line to receive up to £1 million in accident compensation after slipping on a wet floor at work.
The 56-year-old woman was reportedly just finishing her shift when she slipped on wet tiles, falling, hitting her head and knocking herself unconscious. She also sustained damage to her spinal column in the fall and her solicitors have argued that she may need a wheelchair and assistance in the future, although she is currently mobile.
The woman made a claim for accident compensation against her employer, who denied liability. A judge has ruled that whilst the woman was 15 per cent responsible for the accident, her employer was 85 per cent to blame and had breached health and safety laws. The amount of accident compensation to be awarded has yet to be decided but lawyers predict it could be over £1 million.
Media reports detail how the woman had stepped back into the shop to get something to protect her hair from the rain when she fell. The court heard that there was no mat in the doorway where the woman slipped, although chip shop staff often placed cardboard there when it was raining to stop customers from slipping.
